S24O to Northwest River Campground

Just off the heels of my S24O to False Cape State Park, I was anxious for another spin on the bike so I decided to check out Northwest River Park and Campground in Chesapeake, VA. I’ve biked and ridden by the park numerous times but never taken the opportunity to stop in and check it out. It’s a city owned campground which is somewhat rare around here. For whatever reason, city owned campgrounds seem to be much more common in other parts of the country.

It’s a about 27 miles from my doorstep and after getting through some of the more congested areas, makes for some fairly pleasant riding once into the route’s more rural section.

The campground provides nice wooded sites, and (at least this time of year) seems to a great spot for a quick and relaxing getaway.

After getting unpacked and setting up the tent, I fixed (as in “rehydrated”) what turned out to be some surprising good Pad Thai for dinner. Being a city park, alcohol is not allowed so we won’t get into what’s in that cup. Let just say it was lugged for 27 miles and wasn’t going to be taken home. Later in the evening I took a short walk to get in my daily steps and then called it a night, crawled in my tent and drifted off.

I got out pretty early the next morning as I planned on stopping in for breakfast held every month on the 4th Saturday from 8-10 AM at Kempsville Masonic Lodge. Nothing wrong with a big plate of scramble eggs, biscuits and gravy, sausage, bacon, and grits in the middle of a 27 mile bike ride.

Another S24O in the books and probably the last on the bike for a few months. Time to get out backpack and hiking boots, I guess.
